Upper Body Movement for a Patient:

  1. Knock on the patient’s door, and then enter

  2. Greet the patient by name, introduce yourself, and what you’e doing

  3. Provide for privacy by shutting the curtains

  4. Wash your hands

  5. Check the patient’s ID to confirm identity

  6. Lay the patient down

  7. Repeat each exercise below 3 times

  8. The exercises should be done in slow movements

  9. You must support the patient with both arms

  10. You must check on the patient’s comfort level continually

  11. Make sure to keep all limbs covered that are not being worked on

  12. Exercise One: Shoulder Extension - Arm is down by the patient’s side, with one of your hands on their wrist and one hand under the upper arm, raise the straight arm to the front and over head

  13. Exercise Two: Shoulder Abduction - Arm is down the patient’s side, with one of your hands on their wrist and one under the upper arm move the straight arm to the side of the patient’s body

  14. Exercise Three: Shoulder Adduction - Arm is down by the patient’s side, with one of your hands on their wrist and one under the upper arm, cross the straight arm over front of body

  15. Exercise Four: Shoulder Rotation - Arm is down by the patient’s side, with one of your hands on their wrist and the other under the elbow, bend arm at elbow and place at shoulder level, move the forearm down toward the body

  16. Exercise Five: Elbow Flexion - (bicep curls) hold wrist and place other hand under elbow, bend arm at elbow

  17. Exercise Six: Wrist Rotation - Hold wrist and hand rotating wrist in a circular motion (four sides) bottom, side, up, side

  18. Exercise Seven: Finger Flexion - Hold wrist, take each finger individually and bend back , forward, middle. Make sure each finger is done 3 times

  19. Ask the patient if they would like to sit up

  20. Place the call button in the patient’s hand

  21. Wash your hands

  22. Close the curtains
