  • Gait Belt


How to perform the skill:

  1. Knock on door

  2. Greet patient by name.

  3. Introduce yourself and what your doing

  4. Provide for privacy

  5. Wash Hands

  6. Check Patients ID

  7. Ask patient if their ok or feeling any dizziness

  8. Assist patient out of chair

  9. Apply gait belt to patients waist (make sure not too tight) 2-3 fingers underneath.

  10. Ask patient to stand while using hands around gait belt, and assist to upright position (Standing). Use proper body mechanics.

  11. When resident stands ask if they are ok then place one hand on side opposite of you to hold onto the gait belt and one hand placed on the back on the gait belt.

  12. Walk at same pace as the resident (not rushing them) taking at least 25 steps before sitting back down. (you can make small laps) taking at least 25 steps before sitting back down.

  13. Walk back to chair.

  14. Turn and position resident so that they can come back to the chair and sit down.

  15. Assist them back into chair using good body mechanics and bending your knees.

  16. Once sitting, remove the gait belt.

  17. Give call bell

  18. Wash Hands and un-provide privacy


Notes:

  • Constantly ask if the patient is feeling ok. If they are dizzy lay them down and call the nurse.
