What is a Nursing Assistant?
A Nursing Assistant must be state-licensed, and therefore referred to as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA). An interchangeable term is also Certified Nurse Aide. CNAs have very rewarding medical careers because they help their patients in daily activities such as dressing and moving safely. CNAs are also responsible for skills such as measuring pulse, weight, blood pressure, etc. CNAs can work at hospitals and any nursing facility, although most are employed at nursing homes.

How to Become a CNA in Minnesota
The Minnesota Department of Health requires all state-approved CNA training programs in Minnesota to have at least 75 hours of curriculum. At least 16 of these 75 hours must be clinical instruction at a licensed nursing home. The one exception to this is the Minnesota State Health Care Core Curriculum/Nursing Assistant (HCCC/NA). This curriculum must be at least 128 hours in length.

Some schools will have CNA classes near you, while others will offer CNA online courses. But remember, you must complete your clinical hours in-person at an approved nursing facility. You can also find 4-week CNA classes with an accelerated curriculum or a part-time CNA school is you only have limited hours right now to study.
You can also get reimbursed for your fees and get free CNA classes. After you graduate from your CNA training program and pass the CNA test in Minnesota, you are eligible to get a job. If you’re hired at a certified nursing home or boarding care home, you can submit your receipts of your tuition and test fees and request reimbursement. You have to submit this request within 1 year of passing the test. Your employer has 90 days to reimburse you for your tuition. However, you must also remain an employee for at least 90 days, otherwise the nursing home isn’t obligated to reimburse you.
Graduate from your CNA school and you are now eligible to take the state-exam. Once you pass, you will be listed on the Minnesota Nursing Assistant Registry. It’s completely free to be listed on the Registry. It may take up to 4 weeks to get placed on the Registry. You’ll be assigned a unique certificate number and can now start applying to CNA jobs in Minnesota.
A Closer Look at CNA Training in Minnesota
A Nursing Assistant program in Minnesota must include 75 hours of instruction. At least 16 of these 75 hours must be clinical instruction at a licensed nursing home where you will get hands-on experience. The remaining hours will be textbook knowledge that all CNAs must know. The CNA Test in Minnesota
The Minnesota Department of Health issues CNA licenses for the state. However, to administer the actual test, the department contracts with a nationwide testing agency called Pearson VUE. The test is called the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program (NNAAP) Examination. The Minnesota Department of Health also offers an opportunity to take this one test that certifies you as both a Nursing Assistant (NA) and a Home Health Aide (HHA). This is called the NA/HHA Combined Program. The only requirement you need before taking the test is to graduate from a state-approved training program. There is no additional cost. Nursing Assistants must take the complete test but Home Health Aides normally would only take the written portion of the test and not the skills demonstration section.
The NNAAP Examination Exam in Minnesota is made up of a written section and a manual skills section. You must take both the written and skills section when you first take the test. If you fail either section then you can retest on only that section. You must arrive 30 minutes before your test start time. If you arrive late you not not be allowed to take the test and will not be reimbursed for your testing fee. You must pay 2 testing fees: the administrative fee paid to the Technical College for administering the exam, as well as specific exam you’ll be taking with the prices listed below. If you are already hired at a nursing home you must take the test within 4 months of graduating from your training program. However, if you’re not yet employed you have 2 years after your graduation date to take the test, or a maximum of 3 attempts.
The written section is made up of 70 multiple-choice questions about general Nursing Assistant knowledge. If you are uncomfortable with reading the questions, you may instead take the section orally. The oral version of the test is 60 multiple-choice questions and 10 multiple-choice reading comprehension questions. In the manual skills section of the test, you must demonstrate 5 CNA skills. A nursing test administer will randomly choose the 5 skills from a list of a possible 22 skills. You must correctly demonstrate all skills in order to pass this section. You will be given the score results on the same day, right after completing the test.

CNA Job Advancement
There are many opportunities for a Certified Nurse Assistant to promote because it’s considered an entry-level job. The great aspect about becoming a CNA first, is because you can get established with the basic skills of healthcare while getting paid. You can continue to learn on the job and pursue additional education while having a salary. You’ll need more training and certifications to promote. The next step above CNA is a Licensed Practical Nurse, commonly known as a LPN. You can also skip this step and directly become a Registered Nurse (RN).
How to Renew a CNA License in Minnesota
The Minnesota Department of Health requires you to renew your license every 24 months. You should start the renewal process before you license expires because the renewal process can take up to 30 business days. During this time you must have also worked at least 8 hours as a nursing assistant with an employer and a verified paystub. If you do not work at least 8 hours every 24 months then your license will automatically expire. You must also update your Registry information with your current address and any name changes.
