How to Become a CNA in Montana

The Montana Department of Public Health & Human Services oversees the licensing of Certified Nurse Assistants in Montana. Nurse Aides must receive at least 16 hours of classroom training prior to being assigned to resident care covering the following topics:

  • Communication & interpersonal skills

  • Fostering independence

  • Residents’ rights (including Montana law)

  • Safety (fire, disaster, ambulation and transfer techniques)

  • Basic infection control (hand washing/gloving, concept of clean vs dirty, linen handling, handling dishware/utensils, cleaning & disinfection, etc.)

You can enroll in a fast-track CNA program, a local CNA school near you, online Nursing Assistant courses, or even a hybrid Nurse Aide program. A Closer Look at CNA Training and Testing in Montana

A typical CNA program in Montana will teach you how to become a CNA with a combination of textbook classroom education and hands-on learning in a clinical environment. When you take the CNA exam there will be questions on a Written/Knowledge Test. They will be focused in the following subject areas:

  • Infection Control: 11 questions

  • Safety: 8 questions

  • Personal Care: 7 questions

  • Communication: 6 questions

  • Care Impaired: 5 questions

  • Resident Rights: 5 questions

  • Disease Process: 5 questions

  • Mental Health: 4 questions

  • Data Collection: 3 questions

  • Older Adult Growth & Development: 2 questions

The CNA Test in Montana

The Montana Department of Public Health & Human Services administers the Montana CNA Exam in partnership with a private company called D&S Diversified Technologies - Headmaster LLP. Once you have successfully graduated from your Nursing Assistant Program, you can sign up on their website to register for Montana Certified Nurse Aide Exam. You’ll need to take the test within 6 months of your graduation date from your CNA program.

The Montana Certified Nurse Aide Exam consists of 2 sections. The first section is the Knowledge Exam and is a multiple-choice test with 72 questions. An audio (oral) version of the knowledge exam is also available. You must have a 75% score or better to pass the Knowledge Exam.

The second section of the CNA state test is the Manual Skills section. A registered nurse will evaluate how you perform hands-on skills. You will demonstrate 3 or 4 tests with associated scenarios. The tasks are randomly chosen from a list and are performed on an actor posing as a resident. You must correctly perform all of the key steps and 80% of all steps on each task assigned. Hand washing using soap and water is embedded in each of tasks. Examples of some possible skills to be tested are recording the weight of a wheelchair-bound resident, using a gait belt, showing range of motion exercises to a resident, and dressing a resident.

You have 3 attempts to pass the test. Once you pass both sections of the Montana Nursing Assistant Test you’ll be able to earn your Montana CNA License and be added to the Montana CNA Registry.

Congratulations! You are now eligible to work as a Certified Nursing Assistant in Montana.

CNA Exam Cost Broken Down:

  • $20 - Knowledge Evaluation

  • $77 - Clinical Skills Evaluation

On the Day of the Exam, Plan to Bring:

  1. Government-issued Photo Identification Card

  2. Social Security Card

  3. Non-skid, closed-toe shoes
