What is a Certified Nurse Aide?

How to Become a CNA in Kansas

CNA credentialing in Kansas is overseen by the Kansas Department for Aging and Disability Services. CNAs in Kansas must be at least 16 years old. However, 16 year olds and 17 year olds must have a parental consent waiver.

An approved CNA program in Kansas must consist of 90 hours. The course must be 50% classroom education and 50% clinical work. The Kansas Nursing Assistant classes focus on elderly patient care, especially in adult long term facilities and nursing homes, rather than hospitals.

Many CNA schools in Kansas offer flexible schedules such as online classes, hybrid programs, accelerated programs, 4-week CNA classes, weeknight classes, and weekend classes.

The Nurse Aide schools in Kansas have curriculum divided into 2 parts. During CNA school, students are considered a Nurse Aide Trainee I. Upon graduation, they are then considered Nurse Aide Trainee II and can be employed to provide direct care to patients. All CNAs in the workforce are supervised by Registered Nurses (RNs) and Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs).

Part I: This consists of 20 hours of classroom education and 20 hours of clinical lab work. Coursework includes responsibilities of a CNA, communication, infection prevention, mobility, patient profile, safety, grooming, nutrition, elimination, and measuring and recording vital signs.

Part II: This consists of 25 hours of classroom education and 25 hours of clinical lab work in a licensed adult care facility. Coursework includes documenting and recording, dementia, mobility, characteristics of aging, providing comfort, nutrition, first aid, and end-of-life care.

Once completing both parts of a Nurse Aide program in Kansas, students are also designated as Paid Nutrition Assistants (PNA). Their state certification allows them to be paid as Nutrition Assistants.

The CNA Test in Kansas

The Kansas NATCEP Nurse Aide State Exam consists of 100 multiple choice questions, and students must score at lease 75% or higher to pass the exam. Students will have a total of 3 attempts within 12 months to successfully pass the exam, otherwise they will need to retake a CNA program. If you are already a CNA in another state and looking to transfer your license to Kansas, you will need to pass the Kansas CNA state exam in one attempt, otherwise you will need to enroll in a Kansas Nursing Assistant program.

There is a nonrefundable application of $20 to take the state exam. If you need to reschedule your test date there is a $20 fee.

Congratulations! Once you pass the test, you are now listed as active on the Kansas Nurse Aide Registry once you pass your CNA exam. You must be actively listed on the Kansas CNA Registry in order to legally work as a CNA in Kansas. It’s free to be listed on the registry.

As the general population ages, there is a greater need for nurses in medical centers such as nursing homes, assisted living facilities, mental health clinics, outpatient care centers, hospitals, and medical offices. CNA jobs are projected to grow 11% by 2026 and will maintain a 4% increase each year for the next decade until 2032, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The increase is also attributed to the aging population of the medical workforce. As CNAs retire, they will need to be replaced with younger CNAs looking for a rewarding and steady career caring for patients.


CNA Job Advancement

Becoming a Nurse Assistant in Kansas is an excellent way to start your career in the medical field.
