How to Become a CNA in Michigan

All Nurse Aides in the state of Michigan are under the administration of the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulator Affairs (LARA) and the Bureau of Community and Health Systems. However, to certify and test Nurse Aides, the state partners with Prometric, a private testing company.

Certified Nurse Assistants (CNAs) must graduate from a nursing assistant program in Michigan. Each school must have accredited CNA classes in Michigan and each program must have a minimum of 75 course hours with both classroom and clinical studies. The program can usually be completed in 4-15 weeks, and there are some accelerated programs that offer 4-week CNA classes as well. If English is your second language, you can take CNA classes en Español as well. But be aware that you’ll need to take the CNA exam in English. You can find a CNA school near you using our free location tool on this page. Just enter your zip code to find online and local CNA schools. Once you graduate from your CNA program, you can start your state application for the CNA Exam in Michigan.

You may be eligible to be reimbursed for your CNA training program in Michigan. If you are already employed by a federally certified nursing care facility, or have a job offer, all charges for your training will be paid for. This includes textbooks and other required course materials. You can also pay for your training upfront and be reimbursed by your employer if you work at a federally certified nursing care facility no later than 12 months after graduating from your training program. You can apply for reimbursement through your employer and will just need to show proof that you paid for both the CNA program and test.

Before you take your state exam, it’s recommended you take a free CNA practice exam to prepare. We offer a comprehensive study guide to make sure you’re ready for the test. In order to register for the test, you must complete an application form and pay the required exam fees. You must also have completed your CNA training course in Michigan within the last 24 months. You can schedule your test date and test site once your application and payment is processed.

If you have a documented disability recognized under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), then you are eligible for specialty testing accommodations. In order to schedule your test, you would just need to submit a request to Prometric within 30 days of your testing date. Any accommodations would be free of charge. It should be noted that if English if your second language, there are no specialty accommodations because a language barrier is not considered a disability. Also, the Oral Test cannot be substituted because of literacy skills. The exam is written at an elementary reading level.

A Closer Look at CNA Training

A typical CNA program in Michigan will include all the knowledge and skills you must perform for the Certified Nurse Aide (CNA) Competency Evaluation Program. You can expect to learn CNA skills such as:

  • Common Psychological Impairments

  • Acute Emergency Situations

  • Observation of Behavioral Changes

  • Dressing a Patient

  • Nurse Aide Responsibilities

  • Therapeutic Communication

  • Common Injuries

  • Safely Moving a Patient

  • Emotional Support

  • Infection Prevention

  • Feeding a Patient

The CNA Training Program can cost anywhere from $400 to $1,500, depending on the program. For example, the American Red Cross program costs $1,300. However, these fees do not include classroom materials, uniforms, or textbooks. Some facilities, such as adult education centers, and nursing homes, offer free CNA classes, while others accept financial aid and payment plans. You can also get a free CNA Certification if you apply for your employer to reimburse your training if you’re hired within 12 months of getting your certification.

The CNA Test in Michigan

The Certified Nurse Aide (CNA) Competency Evaluation Program in Michigan is administered by Prometric, a nationwide private testing company. You must take the CNA exam at an authorized testing center in Michigan. However, there are exceptions made if you are already employed by a nursing home and want to take the exam at work. The nursing home would need to submit an in-facility request to Prometric and there must be a minimum of 4 candidates testing. Arrive at your test at least 30 minutes before your scheduled appointment to allow enough time to sign in and have the staff review the required documents you must bring to the test site. Bring only the required materials into the testing site. You cannot bring in any study materials, purses, backpacks, cell phones, etc.

The exam consists of 2 parts - a Knowledge Test and a Clinical Skills Test.

The Knowledge portion is made up of 60 multiple-choice questions on a computer. Basic computer skills are fine and you can ask the test administrator if you have any questions on how to use the computer before testing. You’ll have 90 minutes to complete this knowledge section and the questions will consist of Nurse Aide responsibilities, safety, and patient care.

The Clinical Skills Test is comprised of demonstrating nursing skills to the test administrator. You’ll need to start by demonstrating how to correctly wash your hands. Then you’ll be tested on 5 skills from a possible list of 20 skills. These nursing skills will be performed on a mannequin or someone acting as a patient. You’ll need to correctly demonstrate all 5 skills to in order to pass this section of the test. Each skill will need to be completed in a specific amount of time. You don’t need to execute each skill perfectly, but the test administrator should see that you are competent and performing the skills by hitting key checkpoints.

If you’re taking the CNA Competency Evaluation Program in Michigan for the first time, you’ll need to take both the Clinical Skills Test and the Knowledge Test on the same day. Students are given 3 attempts to pass the test. If you fail all 3 times then you are required to re-train at a CNA program and then need to apply again to take the test. If you fail 1 section, then you only need to re-test on that section, not on both the Clinical and Knowledge tests. You must re-test on a different day.

When you complete the CNA exam, you’ll find out immediately if you passed. The test administrator will grade your test and give you an official printed result before you leave. Once you pass both the Clinical Skills Test and the Knowledge Test, you will receive a document by mail about 14 days after your test in order to list your name on the Michigan Nurse Aide Registry. Your certification is valid for 2 years. After that 2-year mark you must renew your CNA license.

If you miss your testing date or need to reschedule your date less than 6 business days before, then you will be considered a no-show to the exam and have to pay the entire test fee again. You may reschedule your test without penalty if it’s more than 6 business days before your testing date but will still have to pay a $25 fee. Check your messages before your test because the test can be canceled due to weather conditions or other major events. If that happens, there is no rescheduling fee.

CNA Exam Cost Broken Down:

  • $115 - Complete Written & Clinical Exam

  • $115 - Oral and Clinical Skills (ADA packet required)

  • $10 - One-time Registration Fee

  • $30 - Re-testing for Written or Oral Test Only

  • $85 - Re-testing for Clinical Skills Test Only

  • $25 - Test Rescheduling Fee

On the Day of the Exam, Plan to Bring:

  1. Two forms of current (non-expired) identification cards. The first must have a photo and a signature, such as a driver’s license or passport. The second identification must have a valid signature, such as a credit card or library card.

  2. Authorization to Test (ATT) Letter. Prometric will send this original letter to you before the testing date.

  3. Non-skid, flat, closed-toe shoes for the clinical evaluation

  4. A watch with a second hand

  5. Uniform or scrubs

CNA Jobs in Michigan

There are nearly 50,000 CNA jobs in Michigan, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Detroit, MI is one of the metropolitan areas with the highest CNA employment in the United States; there are 20,000 CNA jobs in Detroit. In comparison, Grand Rapids, MI has about 7,000 CNA jobs and Lansing, MI has about 2,000 CNA jobs. The remaining CNA jobs in Michigan are spread out throughout the nonmetropolitan areas of the state.

Michigan also have a high location quotient and demand for CNA jobs, meaning that for every 1,000 jobs in the state at least 12 of them are for CNAs. Battle Creek, MI has a high concentration of CNAs as well; for every 1,000 jobs there are at least 20 for CNAs.

The top 10% of CNAs in Michigan make $40,000/year. The highest-paid areas in the state are Ann Arbor, Flint, Jackson, and Kalamazoo. The top CNAs in Ann Arbor make nearly $50,000/year.

Nearly 50% of CNAs work in Nursing Care Facilities, and there are 500 registered nursing homes in Michigan that offer employment.

Where-do-CNAs-Work_.png

The remaining jobs are at hospitals, medical offices, facilities for the elderly, mental health clinics, outpatient care centers, and even film and television housing facilities. CNAs play a such vital role in patient care, that the growth of CNA jobs is projected to grow 11% by 2026. An aging population will significantly increase Nurse Aide jobs. You may also work at a nursing facility for a maximum of 4 months while you are enrolled in your training program.

CNA Job Advancement

A Certified Nurse Assistant is considered an entry-level position in the healthcare field, making it a great stepping stone for many promotions. CNAs work with a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) and directly under a Registered Nurse (RN). They can see exactly what both of those jobs entail with responsibilities. They can then work on their additional training and certifications while still earning a salary as a CNA. CNAs are also well prepared for their schooling as a LPN or RN because they’re already using basic healthcare skills every day. Michigan is a great state to promote from a CNA to a LPN or RN because there are so many healthcare jobs. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics there are about 98,000 job openings for RNs and about 13,000 job openings for LPNs.

You may also join an association for resources and to help advance your career, such as the Michigan Nurses Association.

Renew a CNA Certification in Michigan

The state of Michigan also partners with Prometric to renew CNA licenses. Your certification is valid for 2 years. After that 2-year mark you must renew your CNA license, but make sure to renew it before the expiration date. You’ll need to apply for a renewal 45 days before your license expires.

To renew your CNA license in Michigan, submit the CNA Renewal Form, proof that you’ve worked as a CNA (at least 8 hours in 2 years), and a $20 processing fee. Send these items to:

Prometric
Attn: Michigan Nurse Aide Registry Renewal
7941 Corporate Drive
Nottingham, MD 21236

You are only eligible for renewal if you have been working in nursing-related services under the supervision of a licensed registered nurse. If you have been flagged on the registry for misconduct or misbehavior then you will not be able to renew your CNA license. If your license expires, you are not allowed to be employed as a CNA until it is renewed.
